How important is your N.I.E.?
In relation to estates with Spanish assets, the Spanish N.I.E. (Número de Identificación de Estranjeros) number is the foreign individual’s fiscal identity number. If you have a Spanish property and/or a bank account, you will probably already have this number so you do not need to take any action. Otherwise, it should be applied for as soon as possible. Also, any beneficiaries, who are intended to inherit Spanish assets under your will, require an N.I.E. number. It is highly advisable for all beneficiaries to have N.I.E. numbers at the earliest stage possible- i.e. during the lifetime of the testator, as this speeds up the probate process and can therefore significantly reduce costs and the likelihood of delays. We can provide support for obtaining N.I.E.s both in Spain and without the applicant even leaving home.
